Rally Point Scoring System

BADMINTON ENGLAND

To: Counties and Affiliated Leagues

Dear County Secretary and League Representative

Rally Points Scoring
- Update

Following my letter dated 14 March 2007 I am writing to update you on the specific responses that I have had to the mention that BADMINTON England, along with other nations, has lobbied the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to remove Appendix 3 from the New Laws of Badminton.

As you are aware, Appendix 3 allows the traditional method of scoring to exist alongside the new rally point system.

Even though we have received a great deal of support for rally point scoring from counties, leagues, clubs and members, many of whom are already using or will be using this system, a significant number of leagues, clubs and players have expressed their current dissatisfaction with the introduction of rally points, wanting to continue to play the traditional system.

BADMINTON England will always listen to the views of its members and is concerned about the potential consequences the removal of Appendix 3 might have on English badminton until the issue has been fully considered.

We have therefore requested that the BWF do not present the proposal to its AGM later this month and I can confirm that it will not be an agenda item. What this means is that for the foreseeable future the two scoring systems will continue to be recognized.

In order to progress this situation I shall be initiating an extensive exercise in the coming months to seek the views of our membership in order to decide what approach BADMINTON England might take towards the possible removal of Appendix 3 in future.
This exercise needs to be completed well before the following BWF AGM.

Notwithstanding this exercise, BADMINTON England remains strongly of the opinion that rally point scoring should be used for all badminton played in this country as a positive way forward for the game and can confirm that it will continue to be used at all Badminton England sanctioned events, including junior, senior and veterans inter county matches.

Yours sincerely

Adrian Christy
Chief Executive
