Start of Season Notes

Dane Court have been discussing whether or not they could enter a mixed team. At this stage we are assuming that they will not – if this changes in the next couple of weeks then they will be able to add such a team if the other clubs in that division can fit in the fixtures.
The Judo Club venue in Herne Bay, used by Herne Bay Sports for quite a few years, is no longer available so they are now sharing courts at Herne Bay High School.

Alpha are in the process of sorting out their new venue.

Badminton England (BE) affiliation system is now working for the new season. Just a reminder - BE fees for next season will be £16 for each senior player and £5 for each junior. Kent fees are £6 for seniors and zero for juniors. Remember that clubs must keep the Region’s Match Secretary (Kathy) informed of all player affiliations - players not so affiliated cannot play in our events. PLEASE ENSURE that your first BE set of affiliations is sent in promptly - you can always add any latecomers at a later date. We have access to the BE system so we can check that clubs and players are affiliated.

Please note that fixtures should be confirmed in writing (together with any special points such as the need for two pairs to be available at the start) and clear travel instructions, perhaps with a map, should also be provided. Once fixtures have been confirmed clubs should not seek to make changes except for EXTREME REASONS ONLY (such as very bad weather, unavailability of hall etc) and not because one of the best players is going to be on holiday!! If the cancellation of a match proves unavoidable then the opposition must be given as much notice as possible in order to minimise inconvenience and costs. If there is a late change, cancellation etc then clubs must make sure that the opposition is aware of this – an unacknowledged email, answer phone etc is not acceptable. Remember the rule that clubs conceding matches will be penalised by the deduction of 2 points.

May I remind you that the registration and nomination lists will be due soon after the start of the season. These are two separate requirements to be sent to Kathy - *** Registration - a list of all your club players is an early requirement - only players on this list and who have been or will be affiliated to BE may play in league matches. Further names may be added later. *** Nominations - where you have more than one team of any type (mixed, mens, etc) the players forming all but the lowest team must be nominated before any match of that type takes place. *** If you have teams in the composite or ladies divisions then we need a list of the players who might take part in their order of ranking.

Most clubs now use some on-line option to supply match results such as the Excel system or simply emailing a photo of the match card but if you wish to post a paper/card version then that would be OK. Manual and Excel match cards can be downloaded from the web site.
Whatever method is used please get your teams to send in the results promptly.

Once the season is underway we try to produce league tables on a regular basis. Each table will be posted on the region’s website and emailed to anyone who has requested this - together with all individual results.
Copies of all general letters etc will also be posted on our website.
Just a reminder for clubs in the composite league – if a player is missing then that player must be taken as the lowest rank. The rules have not been updated to cover difficulties which might arise but we will be paying close attention to matches where full teams aren’t present to ensure fair play.

A date has been fixed for the end-of-season inter-club event.
We have decided not to run a second such event earlier in the season.

On behalf of the Committee I should like to wish you an enjoyable season.

Dave Gardner

Inter-Club Event
7th May 2016

Following the success of last year's tournament we kept the same format for this season. It was great that we had 12 teams – the best fit for the venue,
Ursuline College, Westgate, and time.

Run in two groups of 6 teams the final order of the teams was derived from the ratio of points for and points against.
Congratulations go to Invicta/Pilgrims club who came out on top. They entered 3 teams – clearly a club with plenty of keen players.
It was a long day – from 10.00am to 6.00pm – a good work-out for the players and quite busy for those on the desk. It was great to see a hall full of people really enjoying playing.

Dave Gardner our longstanding league secretary and treasurer has been presented with a Badminton England Long Service Award. The award was presented to Dave at the Kent Inter-Regional Badminton Tournament by Geoff Rofe of Badminton England.

The award is in recognition for over 40 years’ service to Badminton in the Kent and the local North Foreland league.

Dave has been the Secretary of the local North Foreland league for near on 40 years and during this time has helped organise County games in our Region, run local tournaments and of course the local leagues.

He has also run and organised, on behalf of Kent Badminton, the Senior and Junior Inter-Regional events for the various badminton regions of Kent.  He is also in charge of sanctioning all tournaments in the Kent area.

Recently he has been involved with Canterbury City Council to organise the setting up of beginner courses for Canterbury/Herne Bay residents, the setting up of Pay and Play Clubs (these are at The Kings and Herne Bay High School) and the setting up of the Canterbury Badminton Network to try and encourage more people into the sport of Badminton.

During all of this time Dave has been and still is a loyal member of Kings Road Badminton Club in Herne Bay playing regularly over the years in the mixed/mens teams and has held the post of Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary in the club.

Dave has made an enormous contribution to badminton in our area.
We have all as badminton players benefited over the years from his organisational skills, tireless work and commitment to the North Foreland Regional Badminton Association whether it be playing in the league or tournaments.

Congratulations Dave on a very well deserved award.
